Having a tax accountant do your income taxes can save you tremendous headaches but it’s crucial to provide all of the necessary paperwork and documents to your tax preparer.

We’ve prepared some tips for you to make sure you have your bases covered.

1) What changed in your life during the tax year? Did your marital status change? Did you sell property? Did you start a business? Even small changes can affect your income taxes and it’s extremely important that you make sure to discuss anything that could be potentially relevant.

2) Contact your pharmacy and any practitioners to have them print out an annual statement. This provides the most accurate summary of yearly medical expenses and helps us determine what is eligible for deductions. If you were required to travel for medical care, it is important to have records of your dates and receipts for those types of expenses as well.

3) Most importantly, be organized. Your tax accountant will have a much easier time preparing your income tax return if your paperwork is organized. Keep similar document types together (ie: employment and income related paperwork, receipts, etc).

Being well prepared prior to speaking with your accountant will make the process smoother. For corporate and personal tax returns, the team at Barter & Associates has the experience required to ensure your tax return is done right. You can also feel confident that we are following COVID-19 protocols and take these guidelines very seriously.
